Food Waste reduction and recycling is important in Florida. Florida cannot meet its 75 percent recycling goal without local governments developing programs for food waste recovery. The following Florida documents may assist local governments with historical and current information for food waste generation and recovery opportunities.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Food Recovery Program works to recover food in two ways:
- By working with farmers. Volunteers visit the farms and collect surplus produce in a process known as gleaning.
- By working with schools. They provide Florida schools with guidance on food waste audits, share tables, food donations and composting.
